About
Heather has always had an affinity with animals, a concern for their habitats and the increasingly degraded environment (upon which both they and we rely). She aims with her drawings, to celebrate the beauty and fundamental importance of Nature.
Although Heather enjoys drawing non-UK animals, she is most keen to depict UK species because she has spent her life observing the wildlife around her, and witnessing their struggles with increasingly challenging environments and compromised habitats. UK garden, woodland and water birds are frequent themes in her work.
Heather is an award winning portrait artist, specialising mostly in detailed drawings of animals - both wildlife and pets. She exhibits her work in galleries and also accepts commissions. She delights in minutiae and the pared-down nature of monochromatic images, which has led to graphite pencil being her chosen medium.
She discovered her interest in portraiture as a teenager, and went on to study Fine Art at Aberystwyth University, from 1998-2001, focussing on printmaking (mainly etching) and drawing. Those three years allowed her the time to explore and develop her drawing skills and techniques in depth.
In 2002, Heather settled in Mid-Wales and began taking pet portrait commissions. She had about 10 years away from drawing, to raise her 2 children (one of whom has a complex medical condition). Only within the last few years has she been able to return to art. She is excited to be once more accepting commissions, exhibiting captivatingly detailed portraits of wildlife, and relishing having the time to draw once again.
In both 2023 and 2024, Heather won the Ailsa Owen Award for her entries in the MOMA Machynlleth Tabernacle Art Competition. She also gained Highly Commended for 2 drawings in the 2024 SAA Artist of the Year Competition, as well a Special Merit Award for a drawing of her daughter in the Portraits competition in Art and Color 365 magazine.
From Heather
I hope you enjoy browsing my site, looking at my galleries and reading the lovely testimonials from my clients. If you're interested in commissioning a wildlife drawing or pet portrait, visit the prices & technical page for more information on the whole process from start to finish.
If you would like to purchase one of my original wildlife drawings, prints or greetings cards, please get in touch through Facebook, Instagram or my contact page.
I work in Tombow Mono100 graphite pencil, on beautiful, 100% cotton, acid-free, hot-press Italian watercolour paper (Fabriano Artistico 300gsm), which does not yellow with age, so if properly framed and looked after, your portrait should last for generations.
My clients come from all over the UK and abroad and you will find testimonials of my portrait work on the Testimonials page .
